Bring on the blues in striking cobalt

January Jones donned cobalt at last year's Emmys

The Queen's Diamond Jubilee is not the only thing putting us in a royal frame of mind this season, as a shade of blue associated with the monarchy has become a bestseller from catwalk to high street.

Cobalt - or royal blue as it has traditionally been known - has long been linked to Margaret Thatcher's boxy power suits and David Hockney's paintings. But thanks to designers such as Celine, Salvatore Ferragamo, Rag & Bone and a variety of other women's designer clothing brands, the hue is gaining traction among the fashion elite.

Kate Middleton may have sparked the trend for stand-out blue garments when she appeared at her official engagement announcement in a sapphire Issa dress, which matched the gem set in her late mother-in-law's ring.

Cobalt is the perfect shade for spring too, as it looks crisp and fresh when teamed with stark whites, simple neutrals and pastel accessories - of which there are plenty around this season.

Diane Von Furstenberg has given us an updated version of the silk Maja dress worn by the Duchess of Cambridge during last summer's US tour, although this time it comes in a beautifully sophisticated shade of neon blue. It's ideal for the workplace and could also be worn at a spring wedding, drinks reception or other formal event, especially when teamed with high peeptoe heels and some tribal-style jewellery, to jump on two of this season's biggest trends.

Kaye Ure of Red Leopard colour and image consultants told the Guardian that cobalt looks fabulous with navy and white for a fresh take on the classic nautical look.

"It equally works with deeper shades such as purple and indigo. Aqua, turquoise and yellow will add warmth," she added.

However, if you're new to wearing bold colours and tend not to stray further than the neutral or darker end of the spectrum, dip your toe into the cobalt waters by investing in blue accessories.

This Anya Hindmarch bag would add a pop of colour to any simple outfit. Its glittery surface offers a touch of glamour, whether you're heading out for post-work drinks or need something that little bit extra special for a birthday event, and you could even find shoes in the same vivid shade if you want to turn heads.
