Christian Louboutin: high heels are 'pleasure with pain'

Christian Louboutin believes wearing heels should be 'pleasure mixed with pain'

Women who pull on a pair of teeteringly high heels should be prepared for some pain, according to design guru Christian Louboutin.

The famous Frenchman told Grazia this week that his iconic shoes are not to be worn by people who aren't prepared to suffer for beauty.

"High heels are pleasure with pain," he told the magazine. "If you can't walk in them, don't wear them."

Monsieur Louboutin said he feels little sympathy for wearers of his eye-catching designs, even when - as Victoria Beckham famously did - they develop bunions and other foot problems.

He noted that with women being able to boost their height with a pair of skyscraper heels, men should also have some help in the footwear department.

"Men in high heels? That’s a prosthesis. But I sympathise. Women have these giant heels. They get taller and taller. The men need help. But a man in heels is ridiculous," he added.

Coleen Rooney was one celebrity whose feet needed to recover after spending a few days walking around in some six-inch heels at Aintree. After the Grand National, the WAG tweeted a picture of some customised trainers and told her followers: "Just what I need on my feet after 3 days at the races with sky high heels on!"

The familiar flash of red sole has become synonymous with the Louboutin brand, and a spilt-second look at a pair of heels is enough for any fashionista to determine whether or not they carry the famous name.

And with this season's ladies fashion trend for 1920s flapper styles coming up, a pair of sky-high heels could be just the thing to pair with a drop-waist dress, art deco-style jewellery and a feathered shrug.

If you can't quite justify blowing your paycheck on a pair of Louboutins, try some Marc by Marc Jacobs shoes to take you from the office to the bar and throughout the weekend. These Gommone Sandals are perfect for a summer wedding or other formal event and come in nude/white and black/tan.
