How to find your perfect handbag

Stylish, strong and elegant - three attributes a bag has to possess in order to secure a place in our wardrobe. Colours and styles may change with the seasons, but a good quality handbag can last a lifetime.

For many of us, our first designer handbag is a rite of passage, something that separates the women from the girls. A beautiful bag pulls an outfit together and attracts admiring glances from others. It can also instil confidence and make us walk taller, even when we've packed too much in it and our arm is now aching. The best thing about a bag? You can wear it any time, even when you're having a fat day.

So what should you be looking out for? Fashion editor at the Telegraph Lisa Armstrong points out that finding the right bag can be like looking for your soulmate - some are too compartmentalised, others feature too many zips, more still are slightly too large, too small or have nowhere inside to store your phone.

But there are some key points that are universal to all women on the search for the perfect tote, clutch or shopper. A top handle is ideal for carting around heavy diaries, purses, keys and lippie, and has the added advantage of being able to slip your arm through and wear it in the crook of your elbow, a la Victoria Beckham.

The ideal bag should also go with the majority of your outfits - there's no point in picking a bright fuchsia hobo bag if you always dress in earthy tones. Neutral colours tend to work well with other shades, so choose something in a tan - like the Anya Hindmarch bag below - cream, ivory, taupe, peach, grey or beige.

A black bag can also look elegant for work or play, making it a great investment if you're looking for a wardrobe staple that can take you anywhere. Just tie a simple scarf to the handle for instant chic that will elevate a black handbag from boring to fabulous.
